Task Description Improvements (More "insert" options, Side bar view, find/replace in description, insert synced description from another task/subtask/parent task, table improvements, insert data chips such as date)
My use of task descriptions is as an ADHD aid to avoid having to go to various different documents/spreadsheets/etc when using ClickUp to walk through tasks with many steps - this helps to make sure steps aren't missed if interruptions happen and also to keep me from being distracted from completing the task at hand. The following updates to the functionality of task descriptions would be wildly helpful in this! Side bar view option • On the left where the subtasks side bar displays, allow multiple resizable "panels" to view description along side task (similar to the behavior of the sidebar in a list calendar view with the tasks section and below it a collapsible section for "your calendars") with a panel that displays the task description (goal is to have the description accessible when walking through steps of a checklist or a list of subtasks without having to scroll) Find/replace in description • My use case: A project templates for a semi-annual wine club shipment and pickup event with upwards of 80 subtasks and sub-subtasks to break down complex multistep processes. The description of sub-tasks for steps that require manual data entry elsewhere have text templates that can be C&P'd. These text templates contain dates that are repeated in multiple lines in different formats that need to be C&P'd separately multiple times (ie: order grouping tags, order grouping titles, order comments for each batch, etc). Each format variation currently is highlighted with a different badge color: "Month, 20YY" are highlighted with a yellow badge, "20YY-MM" has an orange badge, "MM/DD" has a green badge, "DAY (MONTH DD, 20YY)" has a pink badge. The month and year obviously only need to be updated once per project instance while most of the DD will need to be updated a few times a week. Within the template task description "20YY" alone repeats 29 times and each needs to be updated manually when a new project is created. Keeping the badge highlights are helpful for a few different reasons and there are other different formatting settings that I don't want to overwrite as the visual cues are very helpful so simply C&Ping the description into a plaintext tool to Find & Replace and then paste back doesn't work. Table improvements • Use case example: task templates where the task description contains a block of HTML code that needs to be updated and then pasted into a field for an online platform. The layout is a list of 12 items with this format "Bold Text: Text that needs to be updated
" (where each "Bold Text" is different) - in an attempt to make it quicker and easier, I created a table with 3 columns with all cells in the 1st column containing "Bold Text: " the 2nd column is for the value to be updated, and the third column contains "
" with the expectation that I could C&P the list of updated values w/out hunt/pecking to update each value before C&Ping the table into the plaintext field (which removes the table formatting). A column cannot be selected to copy or to paste as a column currently. Insert synced description from another task/subtask/parent task • Using the forward slash, allow to insert a block that contains a synced description from another task, subtask, or parent task - in an outlined block separate from the rest of that task's description. Any time that block is updated anywhere it shows the updated block everywhere it's been placed. Bonus to designate specific line or block of a description rather than the entire description. Tasks/subtasks/sub subtasks could have blocks that would repeat across all linked tasks or sub/sub sub tasks (toggle to expand/collapse) as well as sections unique to only that task. The forward slash insert menu include insertion of "data chips" such as date or other items (especially useful when using templates). • ie: Date (with different date formatting options such as DD/MM/YYYY; Day, Month DD, YYYY; MM/YY; Month YYYY as well as the option to have each instance of the data chip auto-update any time the task is opened or to update once when a template is applied and then remain static) would be a huge timesaver! • In templates specifically, allow for insertion of data chips within a task description that are essentially form fields to be updated upon creation from a template - allow user to tab through each of those fields to update them quickly. Allow the user to designate certain fields within that description as copies of other fields within that same task description. ie: a text block to be pasted into a text box in another platform. ⁃ Update that | FIELD_1 | for | FIELD_2 | is going to happen. You will receive an email notification regarding | FIELD_1 | from this platform on | FIELD_3 |. If you do not see that email by | FIELD_4 | then be sure to log into your account to verify you have enabled | FIELD_2 |. Add option to "lock" a line or block within a description to prevent any updates of that line or block
