Custom Item Types (instead of only Tasks)
planned
Y
Yuri
This is the next step in Clickups intended evolution from task list towards a flexible productivity platform. Item types allows to create names for items types and to create or select custom fields that are used by default for each item type.
In another feature request already the naming of 'item' has been proposed instead of 'task' but the current request is about the ability to create item 'types' that are available on the space level and down, which can hold their own set of custom fields.
This concept is the main principle in CMS such as Drupal which uses the term 'entity' and 'entity type' for its content, and since Clickup is a hybrid this would be a great improvement.

Task terminology
Simonas
Please allow to change task terminology on projects, folders or space level. Some spaces got nothing to do with tasks - its Client or Ticket or Inventory. Would be nice to have ability to have "add new client" instead of task. Monday.com has this feature and it makes sense - not everything is tasks.

Can you confirm in 3.0 that a task type can have its own custom fields that ONLY belong to that type? Yuri Zeb
Luci N.
Hey, Benjamin! Jumping in for Zeb and great question! For the initial release, Custom Item Types will have the same properties and options as tasks, such as permissions and dependencies. In the future, they will have also unique attributes too, such as Custom Fields!
Benjamin
Luci N.: Hey, thanks for the reply. So to confirm at launch 3.0 will just have custom item types & they will be able to use all the same custom fields that tasks use now?
Moving forward those items will be able to have custom fields that can only be used with those item types?
P.S. I need 3.0 now hahah
Luci N.
Hey, Benjamin! That's correct! At the launch of 3.0 you'll be able to use Custom Item Types with the same Custom Fields the tasks use. In the future, you'll be able to use Custom Fields specific to Custom Item Types. We don't have an ETA on this but it is something the team is planning for the future!
Benjamin
Luci N.: Thanks for the reply but that makes me really sad, the power this could bring into making ClickUp a proper CRM, stock management platform, etc is huge. My biggest fear here is could be 1 month or 3 years.
Luci N.
Hey, Benjamin! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on this feature! I want you to know that your feedback does not go unheard and we greatly appreciate it!
Our team was eager to get Custom Item Types into your hands and we decided to ship it with priority features. With that, we will continue to iterate and develop Custom Item Types to make it even better!
Though we can not share an exact ETA, the ability to use specific Custom Fields with Custom Item Types is something that we are hoping to add before the end of this year.
Benjamin
Luci N.: Hope so as you get that by themselves they are not super useful as it means making tasks even more messier with having tons of more custom fields, any way this can be flagged & bumped up the list?
Lee Denny
Sydney Luci N. - do you finally have a release date for this now as part of the 3.0 rollout?
Luci N.
Hey, Lee! Thanks for the tag! Custom Item Types will be rolled out as a part of 3.0. Though we do not have an ETA I can provide for this, we recommend signing up for the ClickUp 3.0 waitlist! We will begin rolling out the ClickUp 3.0 product experience to Workspaces in beta over the next few weeks and will continue to increase the velocity of invites to those on the waitlist!

Hi, as I was about to request this feature, I noticed somebody already had and that other users were also quite interested.
The posts here make it clear that designing this kind of feature in any given direction might mean missing out other users' needs. It seems that, if you can't design a feature without pushing another group of users' needs out, then consider giving us the tools to do the designing ourselves and for our own instances of ClickUp.
The Dev Team can then focus on just improving the tools and integrating the community's output back into the app's flagship features; like the template library and where we create common ground. That way, everyone can make use of the feature in a way that fits their own preferences. I think that's what Yuri was hinting at in his original post.
In any case, I really hope this feature gets some traction.
Kind regards
Liam

This will also help when creating your own CRM in clickup. Instead of creating a new 'Task' for a new contact it could be a .. .drumroll ... Contact

If it is planned to have different "Item/Entity Types," then there should also be an easy way to convert any existing Task or "Item/Entity" from one Type to another...

Kevin Hennessy: And to do this in bulk!!!!
Michael
Mitchel Roe Kevin Hennessy I guess worst case scenario we’d just have to duplicate.
Andrew Watson
Mitchel Roe: As a Milestone is already a different entity type that can be set using the multi-task toolbar, let's hope "Set Milestones" becomes a dropdown selection box of the different types a user has set (rather like the custom fields dropdown).
Dean Phillips
Kevin Hennessy: Yes, you'll be able to convert tasks to any other task type in bulk using the bulk action toolbar.

Clickup markets itself as "One app to replace them all" yet it only manages tasks. Being able to have different item types is the type of feature that could support the claim, should be a priority.
Michael
Tulio Martí: pro hack: you can. You just have to deal with them being called “tasks”.

Clickup needs to have actual projects, not just tasks and lists acting as projects. It doesn't bode well for large, cross functional projects in the system.
Dan Lourenco
Amazing. I was about to suggest this. That's why I still keep using Airtable and Notion.
Michael
Dan Lourenco: or you could just do what the rest of us do and simply create those things even though they’re called “task”. It’s mostly semantics.
