Automation condition of "is/is not subtask"
complete
Jonathan Leung
I want to be able to filter a ClickUp trigger by "subtask".
For instance, when "Task created", I want to be able to add "if it is a subtask".

DONE! 🎆
This has been a long time coming folks and I want to thank you for your patience!
You now have the ability to:
✅ Only trigger automations on tasks
✅ Only trigger automations on subtasks
✅ Trigger automations on both tasks or subtasks (current behavior)
Here's a Video Walkthrough to show how to use the feature.
I anticipate follow-up requests and can't wait to work on those as well. I've tried to merge and compile the ones that I've seen come up below. Please add your votes to the ones you still need to get done! If we've missed anything, let me know:
- Allow Nested Subtasks to also apply for Automations
- Automations | When something happens on a subtask (i.e. status closed), then do something on the parent task
- Automations | When something happens on a parent task (i.e. status closed), then do something on its subtasks
Thank you for your patience and I hope we can save you some time and headaches. 💆♂️
PS: If you'd like to chat with me about automations, I'd love to talk. Just tag me in a comment!

Zach - ClickUp: Awesome update, Zach! It looks fantastic.
Would love to see this request as an option for subtask automation: https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/let-subtasks-inherit-standardcustom-fields-of-parent-tasks

Hey Zach - ClickUp, once this condition is complete can you put in a good word for this: https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/subtasks-should-inherit-their-parent-tasks-status -- all it will then need is the 'then' part of the equation :-)

Changes to Subtask can change field in Parent task

Still would really like automations to be able to change a field in the parent task when a subtask is closed or changed. Would also need to be able to use some conditions so it only happens for certain subtasks closing.

Yes, this is in progress!
I want to be very clear, as I know there are LOTS of asks on this feature request, here's what's
In Progress
that will ship soon:- Ability to make your automations trigger on tasks OR subtasks OR both
- Slightly updated visuals (ex: the When and Then boxes)
We're going to build this iteratively as we'd like to get you some value, sooner! Requests like "when the parent task is completed, then do XYZ to the subtasks" will come in a second phase. They are certainly not forgotten!
Can't wait to get this in your hands 🙌

Small update: After reviewing the feedback here, we touched-up the design and made the experience feel less disjointed (previously it was at the top right)
Hoping to get started here soon!

Zach - ClickUp: Nice! We need this for: if parent task is status done, change status of subtasks to status done. Will this cover that?

Zach - ClickUp: This will be perfect!

Zach - ClickUp: On behalf of your reviewer, I approve this PR - merge this ASAP thanks hahaha

Diana Morgan: I am not sure if it is a setting somewhere, but my workspace asks me this question whenever I close a task that has open subtasks, unresolved comments or checklists that are incomplete.
I get the benefit of automating it, but my OCD brain sometimes wants to know that a task was closed because it was abandoned, no longer necessary, or had a laundry list of things of which only SOME had to be true for the task to be completed, especially if I go back later to review.

Zach - ClickUp: Looks great

Germán Prieto
Zach - ClickUp: Nice, thanks, but it would not be complete without a similar function for the right side of the interface, something like: if "When this happens on a Task/subtask/both", "Then do this action on the same entity/its parent task/its subtasks/all"
Zach - ClickUp
Diana Morgan: We're going to build this iteratively. So phase 1 is what is shown in the image. Phase 2 will be what you're talking about. We'd like to get you some value sooner!
Kenny Kemsley It's just a design prototype right now, but I'll hit you up when I need to get it merged! 😉
Germán Prieto that will be something we tackle in a phase 2 of this feature.

Zach - ClickUp: Looks good, Zach.
This is exactly what I need for a process I am currently building out, where I want Tasks created in List A to be added to List B automatically.
The problem I am having right now is, if I create a subtask under that Task in List A, it also gets added to List B, so it is, in effect, showing twice in List B - both as a nested subtask and on its own.
Looks like this will fix that problem if I set it to not apply to subtasks! 👍

Diana Morgan: this is one of the issues my organization is having with adoption. if the main task is closed (maybe client cancelled) then there's all these hanging subtask projects on people's to do list... and sooner than later people stop checking their individual assigned task lists because it's filled with unhelpful tasks. And yes I understand that if you press the checkmark to close it asks... but for one board, we have a custom status that closes projects automatically. for this case, i haven't been able to find a way for an automation to automatically close the subtasks associated with a task closed by automation. any thoughts there?
Diana Morgan
Christo: We have a very specific case where sub tasks are bug reports. So, when the parent task is fixed (closed), the subtasks need also to be closed so that those who report can follow up with customers. Depending on the dev, sometimes they don't remember to choose to close all subtasks when they close a parent task. I have had to set up a Make.com automation to force this because of the human inconsistency...
