Based on design click up deliberately removed any automation options that is triggered by sub-task and affect main task. What is the benefit for users?

I'd like for it to be possible to set it that when a subtask triggers an automation, it can be made that the automation then does something to the task that the subtask is a part of.

When I select a specific custom field in a subtask and the status is changed, then it automatically sets the status at the task.

Apparently this used to be an option in Clickup 2.0 but has since been removed.

Please bring this back, I want to have 2 stages to one task and once one subtask within the list has been updated, the automation can change the due date, status and stage of the parent task only. Instead I can only find a way to change the subtask.

Currently this is a limitation and we have to use a Super Agent which is consuming quite a bit of AI credits for this. It helps us with the stage a task is at. Here is a screenshot of what's possible in simple automations right now but it only updates the stage field in the subtask and not the main one which is not possible. Adding the screenshot of our Super Agent automation as well which we edited to run on schedules by now because of the credits consumption.

It would be great to be able to update the parent task's status when team members begin working on subtasks, without having to do it manually.

Please add an action which would allow us to create an automation that will move/update the parent task's status as subtasks are worked on.

Currently there is no way to trigger an automation of a parent task based on the status or any other field change of its subtasks. For example, I want to create an automation for once a certain subtask is marked complete, the parent task status changes to a certain status.

If you set up a trigger based on a subtask, the only action it can take is on the subtask, but it cannot take any action on the parent task.

The closest thing currently is using dependencies, but that doesn't work when there are multiple subtasks

We request the ability to automatically update parent task statuses based on the status of their subtasks. Specifically, when a subtask (e.g., User Story) changes status, we need the system to automatically update its parent items (Feature and Epic) to reflect the appropriate progress state. For example, when the first subtask moves to "In Progress," the parent should automatically update to "In Progress"; when all subtasks reach "Completed," the parent should automatically update to "Completed." This would eliminate manual parent updates, ensure accurate hierarchy status tracking, and provide more reliable progress reporting across all levels of our project structure.

It would be extremely helpful if ClickUp allowed automations that update a parent task based on changes in its respective subtasks. For example, when a specific subtask (such as one for client review) moves to "In Progress," the parent task’s project stage (i.e., custom field) could automatically update to "Client Review" to reflect this change. Currently, the built-in automations are limited and require workarounds like using external tools (e.g., Zapier) to bridge the gap.

This feature would streamline workflows and reduce manual updates—especially for teams managing high volumes of projects. ClickUp could better support dynamic project tracking and improve overall productivity.

Currently there is no way to take action on the parent task when something happens to a subtask.

Only when ALL subtasks are resolved, but that's not useful on this case
