Allow in-line replying instead of threads (like Discord, Google Chat, or WhatsApp)
beta
Ryan Wiancko
Adding nuance to this feature is important so that we aren't limited to just threads for our ability to reply to message: https://feedback.clickup.com/chat-feedback/p/send-threaded-message-to-chat-and-thread
90% of the time all I want to do is quickly reply to a message for the sake of context. There is no need 90% of the time to create an entire thread around a reply, just a simple yes/no answer to a question and showing the connection of that yes/no to the original ask is all that is needed.
Look at Discord, NOT slack as a point of reference for Replies and Threads.
Please please please do not emulate Slacks' terrible implementation as if it was some sort of standard to follow, Discord is infinitely more useable and better of an experience

Thanks everyone, for showing your interest!
We've enabled the Beta for you all - refresh your ClickUp app/tab and give it a try.
You'll notice that you can disable the "Threaded Comments" ClickApp now if you'd like, and "Quote Reply" will be present in the toolbar (see photo below).
If you want to keep "Threaded Comments" enabled, Quote Reply will be available in the toolbar in DMs or within threads, but always available in the ellipsis menu or on right-click of a message!
Let us know any feedback you have!

Brendan W, I'm not sure if I was a part of the beta or not. I haven't seen that Quote Reply option in my toolbar or within the ellipsis menu.
Rafa
Joseph Plaizier from what I noticed, you have to click on the 3 dots for more options!

Brendan W It has been great to have this option as well as the reply. I love how you can jump to the original message by clicking on the preview which is super helpful! The design can be improved as it looks a bit busy with lots of text in the preview in my opinion. But it might be a matter of time till I get used to this :)

Brendan W I can't see anything? I have still the threads enabled because colleagues are used to it now. I would like to test it before giving people the option to switch. If I understand correctly it should show in threads?
Lukas Vieyra
Brendan W Hello Brendan,
First of all, thank you for implementing this. It’s a game changer for people in South America who are used to WhatsApp instead of Slack and really dislike threaded replies. Threads are not commonly used here, and they’re probably the single biggest feature causing resistance to adopting ClickUp Chat.
Regarding the reply UI/UX, could you please review how this works in Channels? The “Quote Reply” option is hidden behind the three-dot menu, which makes it harder to discover and use. In regular chats, the reply option is directly visible, which is much more intuitive.
It would be great if Channels could have the same easy-to-access inline reply functionality as regular chats.
Thanks!

Rafa yes I agree.... they need to fix this! It should be directly visible without having to click the 3 dots.

Brendan W please see Lukas Vieyra's comment. This is my feedback as well!
Lukas Vieyra
Brendan W On another question, how can you "disable the Threaded Comments"? Where is that option? Thanks!
Mark Khazanovich
Brendan W So far so good! A couple of things - it will be very helpful when the in-line reply option is added to messages triaged/responded to via the Inbox - any timeline on that?
Also, I feel like there was a period of time where the "quote in reply" button was next to the threaded reply button on the "primary" message option toolbar, rather than needing to get to it via the 3 dots - it was much better when the option was here! (I would even be glad to move some of the other "primary" buttons behind the ... menu, such as "save for later" and "assign")

Joseph Plaizier: You should see it, its enabled for you! Try going to a thread, opening it, and hovering over a thread reply to see "quote"
If you want to use it for parent messages, either turn threaded comments clickapp off, then hover over a message, or click the 3-dot ellipsis menu like Rafa said!
Brendan W
Marina Person: Glad to hear it's working well for you!
What do you think we could change to improve the visual design?
Brendan W
Ruud Mestrom: Yes, you can go into a thread and hover over any reply to see the "Quote" button.
Alternatively, you can go into a DM or Group DM and see the Quote button on any message you hover.
If the threaded comments ClickApp is disabled, you'd see it in place of the "Reply in thread" button 😁
Brendan W
Lukas Vieyra Lauren Hagen As I mentioned above, you can go into the App Center in your Workspace to disable the "Threaded comments" ClickApp.
Once that's done, you'll see "Quote" in the toolbar when you hover over a message!
Brendan W
Mark Khazanovich: We'll be adding it to Inbox and other comment UIs across the app soon! Additionally, we'll be using "quote reply" instead of the quote formatting when you hover over and select "Quote" on any text across the app (pictured below).
Re: the Quote button being in the toolbar, its in the toolbar today if you're replying to a thread or in DMs/Group DMs, as well as if the threaded comments ClickApp is disabled.

Brendan W Possibly look at Teams chat and Messenger as an example. They have the text in a separate box with some contrast so it is easier on my eyes (but again since I am used to these design, I think I prefer this). Or like Discord, the main message stands out becuase the text you are replying to is a bit softer in colour (kind grey, not the same font colour as the main text)? Hope it makes sense!

Brendan W I'm not seeing the quote button. Only when I select text it appears, but that is existing behaviour I would say. Could it be that I'm not yet enabled?
Brendan W
Marina Person: Thanks for the reply!
Brendan W
Ruud Mestrom: It should be there :)
Read my top-level message! Quote reply will show in the toolbar on hover if you're within a DM or Group DM, and on the toolbar if hovering over a thread reply.
You can also turn off the Threaded Comments ClickApp to always see the Quote button in the toolbar across Chat!
R
Ruud Mestrom
Brendan W Yeah I read your comment more than once.
I tried to see it in threads in a task, but couldn't really.
In chat i could use the three dots, and then it is assigned the shortcut 'q'.
I'm not seeing it when hovering over a thread reply, but then most likely I'm not understanding the behaviour here.
I have the thread clickapp ON.
I open a task. I open a thread. I hoever over a thread reply. I don't see anything.
I sent you a clip of my findings.
Davin McNeil
Brendan W, I would still like to be able to see old threads if I turn off threaded comments. Also, a user I didn't know was in the middle of a threaded reply when I turned it off, and they lost the comment they made. Would there be a way to recover it?
Brendan W
Ruud Mestrom: It's not available on tasks just yet, but stay tuned!
Brendan W
Davin McNeil: In Chat, you'll still see threaded replies if the ClickApp is disabled, but unfortunately it's not the same story for tasks, Docs, etc. today. There is a separate feature request you can upvote to fix this!
Regarding the lost comment, unfortunately, no, there wouldn't be a way to recover that draft. Drafts are client-side today, so we don't actually store them in our system to recover.

Ruud Mestrom
Brendan W thanks, didn't spot that. Then I'll await that feature because disabling click app now would move too much stuff to be invisible.
Tim Jasper
Brendan W how does 'quote in reply' work when trying to respond to task comments inline in the inbox? Also if threaded comments are off you can't reply at all to task comments inline? So basically unless you navigate back to the original task comment you're stuck in a thread. Wouldn't it be better if an inbox notification just allowed a response directly in context - ie in the original chat/comment displayed in the right hand panel of the inbox?
Brendan W
Ruud Mestrom: Thanks!
Brendan W
Tim Jasper: With some upcoming improvements to Inbox, we're hoping to allow replying with parent comments to the task directly!
Tim Jasper
Thanks Brendan W . I think one of the bigger issues is that threaded comment replies are collapsed by default, which can make conversations lose some of their context. I suspect that’s part of the reason some ClickUp users end up turning threaded replies off altogether.
More broadly, I think the whole chat/conversation/comment/inbox experience is an area where ClickUp still has a real opportunity to simplify things. I’m looking forward to seeing the upcoming Inbox improvements, and I’m hoping ClickUp moves toward a more consolidated internal communication experience over time.
Longer term, I’d also love to see ClickUp offer a more complete email client — something closer to Missive — so internal and external communication can be coordinated in one place around the work itself.
As always, happy to discuss this further in another ClickUp forum if there’s a better place for this kind of broader feedback.

Brendan W , could you please provide some feedback on how this is intended to work?
Currently, for task comments, the only way to post a new non-threaded reply is within the task’s Activity section. The Inbox only allows you to reply within a thread. If threaded comments are disabled, you have to leave the notification and navigate into the task’s Activity section to add a new comment.
I strongly believe all replies from the Inbox—whether threaded or non-threaded—should be made within the underlying task or Chat thread, ideally displayed in the right-hand panel. The Inbox left panel should remain a notification list, not become a separate place where conversations occur.
At present, the interaction is fragmented and inconsistent: sometimes content expands within the left notification list, sometimes it appears in the right-hand panel, and sometimes you must navigate into the task itself. A consistent notification list on the left, with the relevant task comment or Chat thread displayed and actionable on the right, would make the Inbox much clearer and easier to use.

Please make both possible.
Threads are very essential for us to keep things organized but replies like whatsapp would be very helpful to keep messages targeted to right person/message.
This is specially useful in a channel when multiple people pitch in and it becomes a mess about who is replying to whom
Please don't make us select one over the other.
J
Joseph Plaizier
I appreciate the idea behind threads, but I find it difficult to find recent comments that were made when threads are used. Allowing in line replying like WhatsApp makes more sense to me and makes it easier to see all recent comments instead of having to click through each thread.
Tim Jasper
Joseph Plaizier we could have the best of both worlds if the selected notification allowed you to respond directly in the right hand panel of the inbox)

Nowadays you can only reply to and refer to a message from a thread and many of the members of the company are more useful to answer messages on the same chat and not group them into a thread. Similar to WhatsApp. We see that both options can help organize communications.
