Subtask status change when parent status changes
Laura Mann
I'd would be great if this could be an autmation: If task status changes to XY then change all subtasks status to XY. Even better:
If taskstatus changes to XY change all subtasks, except closed ones, to XY
Use case: When a task is put on hold, we need to put all subtasks that are not closed on hold as well(as this impacts our ressource management).

It's 2025, and ClickUp still doesn't support an automation that updates the status of subtasks based on their parent task's status. Hopefully, this feature will be added soon.

I also do not understand how in 2 years this still was not implemented...

Please please please make this feature!

I fully support this feature request!
As a developer, when pulling data via API, the lack of this functionality creates significant inefficiencies. Without automatic subtask status updates based on parent task status changes, I am forced to retrieve all tasks across every possible status and manually map them to their subtasks. This results in unnecessary resource consumption and slows down the entire data processing pipeline. Implementing this feature would greatly streamline API operations and reduce overhead for many users.

Still waiting on this!

I would really like the ability to automate some of the detail changes in subtasks. The way we use CU there is always information in the main task that would never be different in sub tasks but will have to be shown in subtasks as we pull them to different views for collaboration. In fact I would like automate new subtask creation so the automation could read the info in the parent and copy it to subtask. I already have certain attributes automated like location, status etc. in creation, but all the text fields with changing information per the parent task has to be entered manually.

This is insane that we can't run an automation for this?? When a task or subtask goes active all the sub tasks or sub subtasks also need to go active?

It's surprising that subtasks aren't automatically given the same status. It's currently a manual process. This would seem like logically the way the app should run hence why most people are so surprised.

How is this not a thing yet? It is very annoying to have to change all sub tasks at a mile marker that changes the primary task to a new status. Especially since you require people to pay extra for a business plan in order to get time in status.

This would be a great time saver and drive consistency. A task might be "open" and have subtasks created through automations; if users don't change the parent task's status when they work on one of the subtasks within it, the list/board/reports become inaccurately represented.
