Subtask Badge Absurdity

Matthew Burt I agree with you 1000% Clickup has been rolling things out in an incredibly sloppy way for many years now. And although we all love the app (that's why we're here using it) It is very sad to see that they continually neglect their users wasting our time and money for some of the most basic features that really should have just been built correctly from the beginning. Making us vote on every little problem while they go off and waste resources working on things that nobody asked for is incredibly annoying and downright disrespectful to the loyal users that have been paying them for years. I'm really starting to get fed up with all of these half baked tech companies charging us monthly fees to not solve our problems while using us a bait to attract greedy investors who don't give 2 shits about the consumer's needs. They won't fix basic problems like the one you outlined here but they made sure they jumped all over this ridiculous AI trend that has wall street drooling. This needs to stop!!! 😡👎

Frank Filippelli I just want to come on here and say that it is not lost on me that your last name is Filippelli which also ties into Matt's example video with the Office characters...are you related to Karen Filippelli? 🤣
Matthew Burt
Sherry Haines Whoa that's some deep lore. I've watched The Office all the way through multiple times and didn't remember that being her last name. If this wasn't on purpose, that's a crazy coincidence. If it was on purpose, that's impressive commitment. You have to change your name inside ClickUp for it to change here 🤣
And clearly, I put her name in there but didn't even really pay attention as I just copy/pasted most of that lol.

Thank you for calling out the fact that bug reports or feedback get pushed back as 'that's how it's supposed to work'. Boils my p1ss when I hear that after behaviour has changed or or something broke completely.

Fantastic video. Couldn't agree more! What gets me is the amount of work that we - the customers - have to do to get this app working sensibly.
I would add that task links also do this - on the task card right-hand sidebar they show the number of linked tasks even if they're closed which is not helpful - so that's another area where this behaviour needs to be fixed.

Accurate number of open subtasks shown in task view? Yes please :)

The one thing additional I would like to see added to this, in regards to the hierarchy - is it would be nice that if you have selected in the list filters to show closed tasks that it would apply to everything that in that list and "go down in hierarchy" so that you are not constantly tiring to remember if things are completed in tasks or subtasks for that list
Matthew Burt
Bailey Keyes Yes, being able to see sub-sub-sub-tasks at will rather than clicking around and hoping you don't miss things is very important... probably a different feedback/request though

Matthew Burt OMG, so agree. CU would be incredibly more powerful and logical if it just had an "include all levels" option in filters, like many other PM softwares do (or have as their default behavior). I'm just setting up a department and being driven nuts that filters only work at the task level. Subtasks would allow me to create the perfect structure for my workflow, but I can't use them because I have to get rid of the structure to filter them (using "Subtasks As Separate Tasks"), but I need the structure intact or the filtering is useless. I'm doing lots of rube goldburg stuff to work around this. CU doesn't seem to have any consistent logic around levels, seems like it should be an easy fix. And thanks for the most excellent video ....

Not sure this really solves your problem, but they should be releasing subfolders soon and this may allow you to have the hidden subtasks be tasks in a sub folder. It might require some extensive retooling of your setup though.
For now, what I do is hide the subtasks on our tracking list. But then on everyone's Home I have My Work front and center. It's a rule that EVERY single task MUST have an assigned person and a due date. So this allows us all to work on what we need to without junking up the main tracking lists we review. if we need to drill down we can.
You're welcome for the video. Party on.

Question:
Why not simply create Action Items (previously called Checklists) and go around this entire issue?
- Subtasks were created to break down a complex task into smaller, more manageable tasks.
- What you were showing in the video were simple To-Dos that could be easily accomplished and should be in the Action Items.
- If you created this only to showcase how the feature is broken (which I agree), you can ignore my comment lol
Matthew Burt
Robby Frank Action items do not allow for due dates or custom fields as needed. That is not a solution. My video was simple just because it was a mock video using The Office as comedic value during my rant. 😉

Voted for this because... wow! That said, you should be mindful of the high blood pressure that's going to result from how salty you are about this!
Matthew Burt
Matt Shafer: haha 😅 🧂

The left Subtasks pane is great for navigation and doesn't need a counter. Just remove the confusing counter. I can use the Subtasks tab-thing if I need all the gory details.
Matthew Burt
Wyatt Best: Fair enough, though I think there's a more elegant solution where the task sidebar has everything you need without also having a tab... 🤷🏻♂️
Luis Ramirez
Completely agree with the rant. But more importantly, thanks for teaching me that the subtasks sidebar was even a thing. I've never noticed that tiny icon before. Now I don't have to constantly switch between the stupid tabs.
Matthew Burt
Luis Ramirez: yep :)
