Sort by status order in list view (not alphabetically by status name)
Matthew Cooley
It would be super helpful for our team if we could sort all tasks across all projects by "status" and have them appear in the order our of our status-flow.
It's currently possible to sort by status in list view, but instead of sorting in order of your status pipeline (as they would be in board view, or everywhere else), the list is confusingly sorted alphabetically by names of statuses.
This means that if your workflow order is INFO > BACKLOG > SPRING PLANNING > CURRENT SPRINT > QR sorting them by status in list view will display them out of order, like this: BACKLOG > CURRENT SPRINT > INFO > QR > SPRINT PLANNING

Hi Voters! Thank you for all the feedback & engagement on this request - we definitely hear you and understand why this is a frustrating experience today when sorting by Status. While I don't have a timeline to share yet, we are actively looking into this!
I can also tell you that, while not an exact solve for this, you can sort Statuses in their intended order when grouping by status in List view. It's a little hidden, but in the 'Group by' menu, if you select Status, you'll see this icon appear, which will allow you to sort the Status groups in ascending or descending order depending on your preference. Again, I know this doesn't solve the issue when you don't want to group, and just want to sort by the Status column, but wanted to surface this functionality as it's not easy to find today.

Expected and basic functionality for a task management tool but SIX YEARS and counting... Still NOT marked as PLANNED. :|

Fix this please. It is a huge hole in the product. Some of the fancy stuff you guys are releasing is great. But this needs to sort in the order of the process / status... alphabetical is prehistoric.

This is not a feature request. When creating statuses, we can drag and drop them in our desired order, implying that this order will be reflected in the List view. However, statuses are being sorted alphabetically instead, which is inconsistent and illogical. This behavior is a bug, not a feature request, and must be prioritized for fixing.

Hi Caroline Ginty
I appreciate the challenges involved in running a business and handling feature requests, but I’m seeking clarity on the status of the feature we're discussing. When you say that ClickUp is "looking into this," could you please confirm whether you are evaluating its viability as a feature or assessing the complexity of its implementation?
As a community that actively supports and funds ClickUp, it’s important for us to understand the challenges involved in implementing such a feature. Additionally, given the frequent delays (which are understandable in this industry), it would be helpful for paying customers to receive a rough estimate of both the complexity and the potential timeline. Even a general timeframe with a disclaimer that it could take longer would be beneficial.
Please not that comments that go on forever, which I've seen you say many times "we're looking into this", such comments repeated don't do anything for anyone. After awhile, you should be able to give ROUGH deliverables, even if those too will be delayed. We just don't want to keep hearing, that you're looking into this. Nobody even knows what that means anyways unless your more specific. This will make both the users more understanding of clickups roadmap and challenges, as well as make you less stressed by the virtue of giving ridiculous answers repeatedly and wondering why you're getting frustrated customers in return from your responses over time...
Please provide us with some useful feedback with context, and not the same reply of "looking into it". It's ridiculous.

While this is being fixed, can you also make it so that Status GROUPS (in List/Folder/Space settings) can be put in any order?
So not just the Statuses themselves, but the groups they fall under.
I.e., "Done" could be placed at the top, "Not started" could be placed at the bottom, etc.
That will allow us to have Statuses display in any order we want, and groups of Statuses to display in any order we want as well.
Matt Wilkins
As a big fan of Clickup, I am gobsmacked that: 1. it's not possible to sort by status (the group by status is not compact and not a valid solution); and 2. that this hasn't been fixed with all the constant updates and the clear, demonstrated need for this basic functionality for many years. Please add "Urgent priority" to this request and sort by priority, since you can't sort by status (Open).

Matt Wilkins 8,000,000% this 👆 . PLEASE ClickUp! It's SUCH a glaring omission and hurts List view greatly. 😔

This can be easily done if you add COLUMN "STATUS" in your list, then sort by Status.
That way you can group using any other field and then just sort by Status according.
As someone else mentioned, the easiest way to order Status according to your work flow, would be to number them on the name.
Guy Mannerings
Emiliano Salcido Emily, this is unfortunately not the case. You can group by anything else, sort by Status, and the ordering of tasks by Status is still only alphabetical and not by how it is set up in your List/Space settings.
Yes, you can add numbers, but that doesn't make sense for workflows that don't follow a particular order.
Thanks for the suggestion, of course! :-)

THIS IS NOT A FEATURE REQUEST. Move this to a bug report now please.
Fix the intended functionality and stop messing with AI and dashboards for the love of all things holy while you have basic things like this not working.

Wow, this has been a known issue since 2018? It's now 2024, it's been around 6 years without a fix on this. I have to group my lists by other fields, so grouping by status isn't an option, but this alphabetical sorting makes this function absolutely pointless. I might as well just sort by task name.

Caroline Ginty: for the love of god, you guys, how hard can this truly be? It’s a basic sort function. Is your tech stack built on slot cards?

Caroline Ginty: Guys and giels really. Absence of sorting in sequence order makes lists a little bit dumb to use as managerial tool. Cause statuses often influence priority more than priority itself.
Alex Calinov
Caroline Ginty: Actively looking into this? LOL. It will probably take another year for you to look into it, then maybe finally will be marked as Planned, then you'll need 1-2 years to work on it before it gets released. Making a total of about 7 years since it's first been requested .. LOL.. what a joke
Caroline Ginty
We'll post updates here as we have them!
Aleksandar Lugonja
Caroline Ginty this is not working for us. We use breakdown by tag (release tags), so we can't breakdown by both tag and status. Please bump the priority of this issue in your pipeline. It's not a feature request, this is an obvious bug, and 582 people upvoting it spent their day to find it here and vote to fix it...probably thousands are irritated daily by it, just didn't feel enough pain to write it here.
