Show Task Type Descriptions When Changing Task Types
Ryan MacAlmon (HPE)
Today:
Task Type descriptions are available when users create a new task, but they are not shown when users change an existing task’s type from the List, Board, Gantt, or other views. Users can see the type name and icon, but they lack the context needed to understand what each type is intended for.
This is especially confusing when an organization has multiple custom Task Types with similar names or specialized usage guidance.
Desired:
When a user opens the Task Type selector to change an existing task, hovering over—or otherwise focusing on—a Task Type should display its configured description, using the same guidance shown in the task-creation flow.
The behavior should be consistent across all surfaces where Task Type can be changed, including List, Board, Gantt, and task details.
Business Justification:
Task Types are an important part of enterprise information architecture, workflow design, and reporting. Without descriptions available during changes, users must guess which type to select or leave ClickUp to consult separate documentation.
Providing contextual guidance would:
- Improve adoption of standardized Task Types
- Reduce misclassification and downstream reporting errors
- Lower admin and support overhead caused by “which type should I use?” questions
- Make governance easier as organizations add more custom Task Types
- Provide a more consistent experience between creating and updating tasks
Acceptance Criteria:
- A Task Type’s configured description is available when selecting a new type for an existing task.
- The description appears on hover and is accessible through keyboard focus where supported.
- The behavior works consistently in List, Board, Gantt, and task-detail experiences that support changing Task Type.
- The same description content is used in both the create-task and change-task flows.
- If no description is configured, the selector continues to work without showing an empty tooltip or broken state.
