Show parent task name for subtasks in dashboard widgets
complete
Destiny Pidgeon
In the dashboard list widgets, there is an option to show the breadcrumbs of the task. Right now this only shows the hierarchy (space/folder/list) and excludes the parent task name when the task showing is a subtask.
This is a necessary part of the breadcrumbs/hierarchy. Frequently you will find that a parent task will have a client name and subtasks will not due to redundancy.
I think this just makes sense to be included in the existing show breadcrumbs feature (similar to the "show task locations" toggle on the home view.) But at minimum, there needs to be an additional toggle to show the parent name, like there is in views.
Also, I would like to have the option to toggle this setting for the new feature where when you click a calculation, chart, etc and it shows the list of tasks being attributed to that data. (But the list widget is higher priority.)

Hey, everyone!
Our new Task List card is 100% rolled out to all users and parent task name can now be displayed on subtasks.
Let us know if you have any questions or run into trouble! Thanks!

Although this feature request is specific to dashboard widgets, it would be nice to have it on the home agenda as well. I don't use Google agenda, but I'm interested in using the built-in ClickUp agenda.
I'm using Duolingo for language learning. I created tasks and subtasks reflecting the sections, units, and lessons of my Duolingo course, but on the home agenda, it only shows a subtask's name. As shown in the attached image, I see "Lesson 1", but it is lesson of what? I have to open up the subtask's description to understand its context.
I could make every subtask have a verbose name, but that would be cumbersome. A breadcrumbs with the parent task hierarchy would fit well here too, on the home agenda.

Michael Van Doorn: Yay! That said, I checked the dashboard widgets we use most frequently--time tracking being a big one--and the parent task isn't listed there. It still doesn't show in the export either. Definitely good to see it in some of the other task widgets, but at least for our organization the issue persists: we ultimately want to be able to understand what parent task time entries relate to.

Michael Van Doorn: Michael,
Great news. Do I have to do anything to make the Parent Task show up in the dashboard breadcrumbs? Is this in the settings? I have the breadcrumbs option set to on, but still not parent task showing up in the breadcrumbs.

Kirk Manton: Hey Kirk, I was talking with ClickUp chat and they have shown me how to do this so thought I would share:
- Click on "customize" within the task card
- Select "List Options"
- Toggle on "Subtask Parent Names"

Michael Van Doorn: Please do not mark this request Complete when the feature is only available on List card. The dashboard cards I am using still do not offer this improvement.

I agree. We use Tasks for Deliverables and Subtasks for Actions. I created a dashboard filtered to only Subtasks and would love to show the Parent Task in the breadcrumbs above each Subtask (Action)! Seem like it would be simple since that option is available at the Subtask level of the main List View. This would be super beneficial for our team's efficiency.

After going back and forth between using lists or tasks for each individual job, I have to say that it's really frustrating having to compromise. With lists, there is no ability to automatically apply a template or apply a template to an existing list (if I update my template for each job, I'd like to be able to do this). With jobs as tasks, the dashboard is nearly useless because I have no idea which job each subtask in the dashboard is part of. Am I doing something wrong? I've watched piles of videos on using ClickUp and spent hours of time. I'm finally getting somewhere with understanding how to set it up as an asset to my business but I keep hitting these roadblocks and silly issues that - on the surface - seem so simple.

Is there an ETA for this? We were so excited when it rolled out!

Hey everyone!
I'm happy to share that our all-new Task List card is now enabled for all users! 🎉
This brand-new card allows you to show parent breadcrumbs, sort, calculate columns, create tasks, set fields inline, and more!
Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey, everyone!
We have an all-new Task List Card in the works which we expect to release to Production in the coming weeks!
This card has near feature parity with List view and includes the option to show parent task names on subtasks.
Looking forward to getting this out to you all!

Michael Van Doorn: This looks great, though maybe to Destiny Pidgeon's original point (I could be wrong!) part of what's also missing is having the Parent Task display more prominently in dashboards.
I believe I opened a feature request/issue for this some time ago, but basically, when you look at time tracking or progress in a dashboard widget, and you have the task name show, it's giving the subtask name. That's good to know, but in our example we have templates set up for certain tasks, and subtasks often carry similar names... like "Write press release" or "Send proof to client." So it's nice to have that subtask note the parent task in that view you shared, but I wouldn't want to lose sight of the desire to just be able to engage with a Parent Task name in the same way we might a List or Folder... i.e. show in a dashboard widget how much time was spent on a Parent Task, as opposed to always showing the Subtask name. (this is a little tough to explain, but hopefully that makes some kind of sense)

Michael Van Doorn: How close is this rollout? It would also be nice to only show subtasks as a filter option.

Hey Andrew Diamond!
We've resolved the identified critical bugs and will begin a slow rollout following our next release! I'll follow up here when the rollout has finished

Show Parent Task in Task List Card
Matt Langlois
Why is the parent task not an option to be included in the task-list card?
We can have breadcrumbs showing the list/space, but not the parent task...this seems backwards!
Please add the parent task to the task list dashboard card.
I use this to see a list of all pending email follow-ups, unassigned tasks for my team, and much more, and without the parent task showing I need to click into each subtask individually - not ideal.
