Thank you all for all the feedback and ideas here. Even though we monitor this thread closely and continue to improve the Gantt experience as per your feedback, I'd like to encourage you to create new posts for specific feature requests you might have that are related to Gantt so that they get more visibility and you can track their status.

Need your input:
We will add an option to show task type icons on Gantt task blocks like illustrated in the attached image. We are thinking of showing these icons for any task type that's not your default task type (typically "task").- Should this be on by default?
- Do milestones need special treatment or if icons are not shown, milestone icons shouldn't be shown either?
- Any other thoughts?

Bugra Oktay If you like, you can contact me back. Today I have been working on a schedule for an aerospace project (satellite construction), meaning I can tell quite some things that are missing and might help communication with the customer chain. This is also interesting to see what people are expecting to see and to do in Gantt chart. I leave the option open to you. If interested, I suppose you are able to check for my contact details. But in general, I like that ClickUp is doing their effort in building solid gantt charts for project management. Really necessary for project managers. Cheers !

Bugra Oktay I think milestones in project management are themselves much more than just icons, and should remain when other icons are not visible.
Huw Whyment
Bugra Oktay I would just leave as the milestone personally, its probably worth focussing elsewhere theres plenty more to improve on for gantt view

Bugra Oktay ALWAYS show milestones. When you present other task types, make them more noticable than any other.

Regarding the integration of task type icons on Gantt task blocks, my analysis strongly supports the following recommendations:
Should this be on by default?
Yes, this feature should be enabled by default. From an operational efficiency and user experience perspective, immediate visual identification of task types enhances clarity and reduces cognitive load for users managing complex project timelines. It optimizes data interpretation by providing a quick, at-a-glance understanding of diverse task natures without requiring users to inspect each task's details. Given the objective of a Gantt chart to provide a clear project overview, integrating visual cues directly into the task blocks aligns perfectly with best practices for intuitive information display. Maximizing user value and minimizing configuration overhead are key objectives, and making this functionality inherent and non-optional for all non-default task types would be the most effective approach.
Do milestones need special treatment or if icons are not shown, milestone icons shouldn't be shown either?
Milestones, by their very definition, represent critical points in a project timeline and are inherently distinct from standard tasks. Therefore, they warrant specific visual representation. If the general policy is to display icons for any non-default task type, milestones should undoubtedly receive a dedicated icon. This icon should be distinct and universally recognizable as a milestone marker, further reinforcing its critical status and providing immediate visual hierarchy within the project plan. Hiding milestone icons when other task type icons are shown would diminish their visual prominence and contradict their inherent importance. Consistency dictates that if visual differentiators are applied, critical project elements like milestones must also participate in this visual schema.

Bugra Oktay I vote for:
Task type icons on by default,
With the option to disable icons
Milestones should always be on, as the type is a unique standard element across all project planning.

Yes, please have it on by default.
Yes, milesotnes need special treatment - they are an integral part of industry standard Gantt charts. The special treatment could be that the user can can toggle the Task types as a whole, but the Milestones individually. Heck, if you can toggle one task type individually, then make it possible to choose which tasks types show or not per type - then my gantt chart will work how I want it to, and the next person's will work how they want it to.
Once you have put task types in that spot on the gantt chart, are you going to put Dropdown & Label custom fields next?? Asking for a friend.

Looks like I'm in the minority here Bugra Oktay, but the way we use TTs wouldn't have much bearing on our GANTT views. We... (I)... are using them primarily for product categories to help filter massive amounts of CFs. Milestones I can see being there by default, but we have no real need for TT icons in GANTT - at least as far as I can tell for now. I agree with a few other posters in here that think that there are probably more important GANTT features to spend efforts on.

Improvement update:
You can now select the date range for your Gantt exports. This will let you control the information density and your prints will be much more readable.Michał Mrzygłocki
Bugra Oktay, it's a great feature. I'm still getting the date range wider than the selected one. I'm not sure why is that.

Michał Mrzygłocki: is it consistently wider every time?

I'm starting to fiddle around with GANTT again now that my employer
might
be getting serious about ClickUp again, so riddle me this: I have a task with two subtasks. I want the due date of the subtasks of course to control the ultimate due date of the parent task. But when I slide the end of the subtask fwd a few days, not only does it move the end of the parent task, but also the beginning. Shouldn't the beginning (start date) of the parent task stay the same being that it's in the past and already done? Am I missing something? Bugra Oktay?Update: and hopefully we're getting some of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6I8M52wBIg

Bugra Oktay Hello. By asking to create new posts, metrics are lost regarding when each feature was requested and the time elapsed since waiting for them. ClickUp should have created branch posts with original posting date to reflect effective time it took or will have taken for the feature to be released.

Bugra Oktay Can we close this thread then at some point?

A basic addition to the Gantt chart would be to view a time period or a milestone as a vertical background color on the Gantt view, as requested here: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/view-vertical-milestones-in-gantt
Michael
thanks Bram Faems - maybe we could go ahead and merge those Bugra Oktay Luci N.?

Please make it so bars representing tasks in Gantt fill with colour according to percentage complete. So a task that is 25% complete will be filled with colour 1/4 of the way from the left and the remainder of the bar is grey.

Hi, for either the gantt chart or the timeline could we please have something similar to this view in the image below?
We are running multiple projects so we need to see:
The different phases in a single line (like timeline and not the layered view in the gantt as this is very complicated with all the different lines ie. list line and then task lines).
We also need to see which team member is allocated to those projects so that we can see if they are oversubscribed on a high level or not (see heat map).
We also need to see who the team lead is on those various projects.
We are almost there with the timeline view but there are elements missing such as assignee, time estimate options. if it could also pull in the time tracked so far then we would also be able to compare the time estimated for the project vs actual time it took to complete the project (in numbers on the column on the left would be good).

The ability to hide particular tasks in Gantt view for exporting

Good morning,
I use the Gant for an engineering/construction company, it is very useful for us to have a complete picture of the activities in progress and that are planned.
Even more useful would be to be able to create time intervals for the start and end dates of the tasks, so as to easily identify work periods, insert empty rest periods, make statistics on the duration of the subtasks taking into account the actual working days.
I know that the Gant view does not include time interruptions but a continuous bar, you could evaluate a view more similar to a schedule to be shared also with the customer.
So, as it is now, I find the applicability of the Gant only for hypothetical forecasts, but with little operational use.
I would also add that the possibility of having a slightly larger screen zoom would complete the work.
If you have about ten construction sites at the same time (active or not) with dedicated subtasks, today it is not possible to view them all together in a single view.
I hope you can accept this request and allow me to adapt it to our needs.
thanks

Good morning,
Is there anything new to my request by chance?
Thanks in advance
Michael
Vania Pellicioli - only a semi-educated guess here but, Bugra Oktay marked this as "Building Now" on July 29, 2025. An upgrade like this I'd put at least a 6mo timeline on. Being that we're at 5mo now, and ClickUp 4 Beta just dropped, I'm thinking it will roll out with, or shortly after the 4.0 officially drops.

An improvement that would make a lot of difference: today the Gantt is one of the only visualizations that does not allow you to group tasks. This limits a lot. It would be very useful to be able to group by custom fields or even by other criteria, as is already the case in other views - and even in tools like Notion.
