Make it easier to create and edit templates without needing to apply the template first (e.g. in Template Center)
future
Michelle Duchene
I shouldn't have to create a task, apply a template, edit the task, then save the template.
I should be able to edit the template directly in the template centre, then close the template centre when finished.

Hey everyone! Thank you for sharing your ideas! In order to help with prioritization, I'm going to keep this request focused on making it easier to edit templates without applying the template first.
I'm using the below separate posts for each of the other main ideas in this feature request:
- Preview a template before applying it: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/preview-a-template-before-applying-it
- See where templates are being referenced (e.g. automations, task templates): https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/see-where-templates-are-being-referenced-eg-automations-task-templates
- Ability to organize templates: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/ability-to-organize-my-templates-in-template-center-or-a-template-hub
If you'd like to add a vote and share your feedback on the other requests, this will help our team prioritize your different ideas.
Thank you!

Lily Chan Please consider enabling template modification as a permission that can be controlled by role. Currently, any user with access to a space or list can modify a template, and there is no history or log for tracking and approving changes. For projects or complex process workflows, templates should be protected—either with a document/view‑protection‑like feature or through role‑based permissions.
Thank you!

Karina Leticia Garcia Montecinos For more granular permissions for templates, can you please also vote on this feature request? https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/granular-permissions-in-templates-who-can-create-edit-delete-templates-globally
Our current thoughts are that we'll have to tackle granular permissions hand-in-hand with making editing templates easier.

Lily Chan is there any updated timing on this feature? This would save so much time and is so necessary to keep things aligned and organized
Lily Chan
Maiya Holliday Thanks for following-up. We're planning an engineering spike to explore possible solutions to solve this problem from an engineering perspective, and tackling scope and design over the next few months. I will have a better idea of timing after we've flushed out scope and approach.

1000%! Long overdue, it would be so helpful to have a proper template library instead of having tasks that constantly need to be updated and save over as a template

I find it very time consuming and frustrating to have to go through the current process to simply add a task or make an amendment to a template. I have templates with a lot of tasks and things change or spelling errors etc. This wastes a lot of my time.
Maiya Holliday
Jenny agreed, it's one of my main gripes with Clickup, so much wasted time

Template Manager

Rachel Hurley
We need a true Template Manager in ClickUp — a centralized place to create, edit, and manage task, list, and folder templates without having to download them as live items first.
Currently, making any update to a template requires creating a real task/list/folder, which triggers unwanted notifications to assignees and creates unnecessary clutter. This also increases the risk of accidental changes and slows down teams who rely heavily on templates.
A dedicated Template Manager (similar to the Custom Fields Manager) would allow users to open and edit templates directly, update assignees safely, and maintain consistent, up-to-date processes across the workspace. This would significantly improve efficiency and template accuracy for many ClickUp users.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and enthusiasm. Mike Masin has the right FR for this request so I'm going to merge it into that one.

Edit templates

I'd like to be able to modify a task template without instantiating it. Currently, to update a template, I need to create a task using the existing template, make the necessary changes, and then save the task again as an updated template. Instead, I would like to open the 'skeleton' of the model and modify it. So I'll be ready for the next task right away.

It appears the team did not do a QA of the templates because it appears there is limited ability to edit a task template.

I cannot believe that this thing is parked given and delivering bullshit AI features are prioritized over such things.

Yes yes yes, the amount of time spent editing and creating complex templates that send endless notifications to other team members is astounding! Would love a true template management. This would be a tremendous addition
