Group, Sort, and Filter by Relationship field in Views
in progress
Jake Spirek
Here's a sample use case:
I want to create a list of projects and group them by Client. The Client is a relationship to a task in a list called Clients.
For some reason, I do have the ability to group by some of the linked items, like assignee (in this case I called it "Client Owner").

Hey Everyone!
We've released some new features today. The team is working on documentation updates, but I wanted to share the details here first. 🙂
We added support for Custom Relationships in a few different areas:
- Bulk action toolbar:You're now able to bulk set custom relationships via the relationships option.
- Group by Custom Relationships:This is currently only on list view, but you can check it out and start grouping items by their custom relationships.
- Filter by Custom Relationships:This is available everywhere filtering is, you will now see your custom relationships as items you can filter by.
There is still a lot more we plan to work on. This will be the year of relationships for the team, so we hope to be back soon with some more updates!
Here is a 2-minute clip of me going through some of the features (apologies for the fan noise 😅)

Would love to see grouping by relationship for board view. Any news here?

Ivan Villa any update on this? This is also something our teams are looking to have.
Joshua Borger
Ivan Villa Same question. Eagerly awaiting grouping by relationship for board view! As long as organizing columns can be manual--that's a must for us, since we use relationships for linking user stories to epics, then plot those on a user story map.

There needs to be a "Dependency Type" field containing the type of relationship for example "Blocker" or "Waiting On" that is available in the grouping, sorting, filter & download features.

Would love to see grouping by relationship for board view. The reason why is because we use user story maps for the initial planning and design for products, which has the backbone of the product (epics) and then the underlying user stories. If we could group by relationship in board view, I could simulate this process in the board view and make changes a lot easier to implement. Currently we use a whiteboard, but moving objects constantly and updating them aren't the smoothest in whiteboards.
Joshua Borger
To be able to accomplish this, grouping by relationships would need to be able to be manually ordered. So in board view, I could organize the epics in the order I need them from left to right.

Awesome first step. It would be really good to have it in the hierarchy, for example on a folder
Les
Allow two layers of grouping in relationships to allow three levels of heirchy in one view like other software by creating a "lookup" feature. Example in Smartsuite. Fast Forward to 2 minute and 55 second mark in the video.

Really great first step! Will we also be able to sort, group, filter by RollUp soon as well? This is very important as well
Benjamin Wettlaufer
Hi Ivan. that's already great progress - many thanks! If you now could visualise Relations in a pie chart, then I'm happy!

Yes, very useful indeed. I had to use a workaround to get the filtering and grouping done and had to add the relationship one by one. Thank you for this improvement.

Ivan Villa amazing! This could really change how we build out projects for the better.

Ivan Villa That's great and will be super-useful. Thank you team!

Ivan Villa This is such an amazing start! Would love to see the Rollup fields be included in these new features
Matthew Regenie
Ivan Villa Love it, great work! This feature is a game changer
Jake Spirek
Ivan Villa awesome!!
Bart
Ivan Villa Awesome!

Ivan Villa Love it, such an improvement. I'll look forward to being able to bulk remove relationships too since our most common use case is when someone leaves a client organisation and I need to essentially "find and replace" them.
Michael Montefusco
Ivan Villa saw this yesterday and almost flipped!!!! YES!!!!
Pierre Becher
Ivan Villa Awesome, that's great. Just wondering if the filtering will also be supported for the "Linked Tasks" fields, which is not a custom reltionship field.

Pavel Jarolimek
Ivan Villa Great! Are you planning to include realitionship in search? Now when you search through tasks this field is being ignored.

Ivan VillaI love it, thank you so much.
Just a quick question, if it's going to be added to the Board view as well.
Hetal
Ivan Villa Seems a bit like give an inch and they'll ask for a mile, but I thought I'd ask anyway as it would really help solve some of our problems.
Loving the fact that Group By Relationship Field got implemented. Any chance that Group By Rollup Field might be coming up any time soon? Could be an easy extension perhaps?
Joshua Borger
Ivan Villa Love the update. Would really benefit from group by custom relationships being added to board view as well!
Cassandra Anderson
Ivan Villa, weirdly the video is requiring I login to the staging area, but then says I can't login without a workspace. Any chance you can post a public viewable link?

I am looking for Group by Relationship for views on the Space level, not just the list level. So when I make a view of all my tasks from all my lists in a space or even across the workspace I want to group by relationship. Is this possible with this new feature?
