Convert List and Tasks to Task and Subtasks
Ivan Villa
We would love to hear how people would use this and what they expect to happen with all the data associated (comments, lists, etc.)

I'm a builder I created a Space for my CRM and another for my Jobs. Whithin my CRM space I just had a folder and then a list of customers as they progress through the sales.. I want to take that Customer and use it to create a new folder (job). Well I didnt find out that I cant do it untill after I spent a few hours creating a sample Job at the folder level and Phases at the list level. with tasks. After speaking with support (GREAT GUY! Jake) realized I need to move all my data down one level. So my Lists now all need to be tasks.... My reason for this upgrade.

As projects grow, or pieces get broken off into their own focus units, things need to get move up AND (!) down in their relative hierarchies.
For instance, a small initiative, might grow into a full-blown project, which may turn into a department, even a separate entity with it's own workspace.
Similarly, going the other way, you may realize that something you thought was a project unto itself, is actually a component piece of a larger project, needs to get 'moved down' a level, and folded into a larger parent initiative.
The ability to be able to do this, Promote or Demote, would be a HUGE benefit to anyone who has ever struggled to get the level of hierarchy right first time. It's one of those things that causes massive overwhelm, and mental lockup, as a person tries to foresee every component piece of a project, at every level, before they can put anything in place ... This is one of the BIG places where people new to ClickUp get hungup and quit! (ClickUp, or HungUp? Ha!)
This would introduce flexibility, and the ability to brainstorm at speed ... and getting it 'wrong' would be okay! You could simply move it up or down later.
Yeah, I realize that's like Q saying, "All you have to do is simply adjust the gravitational constant of the Universe!" -- but it truly would be miraculous ... Good luck, though, with all the associated data! LOL! :)
Appreciate you all, for the continued excellent work you do ... and for the willingness to try the apparently impossible.

@Household Morrell-Stinson: yes, this is everything I wanted to say

This would be useful because I have already realized with complex projects that my hierarchy is screwed up. I had to map how i wanted different types of projects to be represented and realized that I was using lists and folders incorrectly. I have a lot of lists that really should be tasks with subtasks and folders that should be lists.

I have a daily template & a weekly template. Every day I create my daily tasks for the next day (using the daily template, plus whatever individual items come up). I also add the items from the appropriate checklist in the weekly template to my daily tasks. (On Monday move items from Monday checklist to daily tasks, on Tuesday move the items from the checklist to the daily tasks, etc.)

When importing from Wrike, a Wrike Project (equivalent to a Task in Clickup) is imported as a List with the Wrike Subtasks imported as tasks in that list.
It would be useful to have the ability to convert this list into a task, and the tasks to subtasks, to correct the importing glitch.

We need statuses for Lists (for dashboards and reports, gantt, etc.) so I create a new list where all the lists (my projects) are tasks with customized statuses. It will be very helpful to have the reverse option of converting a list to task.

Use case 1: You imported items as a checklist, but you want use subtasks. Copying them manually is annoying.
Use case 2: You think you have one or two items so a check list will be fine, but then you add more items as the project grows. Have some items buried in a check list makes it hard to visualize all the items need to complete the task.
What I think should be carried over from the main task:
- Assignee
- Start Date / Due Date
- Priority
- Tags
Of course any of these could be edited later, but the would be the most helpful to set up initially.
I really hope this feature becomes a reality. I'm a bit surprised it's part of the product already.
EDIT AFTER MANUALLY CONVERTING TASKS
- On the checklist items, add an option to the contextual menu (3 dots) to "Convert Item to Subtask"
- Item gets copied with no additional details added, and then the you see the task ready to assign and set priority/due dates, etc.
Or
, once you click on the option to make a subtask, there is an additional widow with a few options to assign from the main task (such as dates, assignee, priority, and tags). User can select these to include these in the new subtask as needed.- Once subtask is created, the check list item disappears.

I have a few backlogs already set up with "great ideas for the future", but sometimes an existing project (which got set up as a list with tasks) goes on pause and needs to go to the backlog. It would nice to have an easy way to "demote" it to a list with subtasks so it can be included with the others, and also categorized. Then, if the project gets revived we "promote" it again to a list.

Related to this request:
Since at times it's hard to figure out what should be a List, and what should be a Task, mainly because sometimes a List is too limited in functionality (no status, etc.), I have wanted to convert my Lists back to tasks.
Thanks guys!

I created a task within a list which turned out to be a much bigger project so i would like to make the list a folder

@Jamila Lawal: me too. did you discover how to do this?🙏

@Leanne Hinsch: I did it manually in the end! Took a long time but really helped me to visualise my tasks!
