ClickUp AI - Extract data from attachments
planned
Julien da Costa
Is it possible to create a word or pdf template, and set to ClickUp AI extract each data from attached word form to each custom field, setting by me?
For example...
I say to ClickUp AI that I have a template form document in word.
And everytime I attach a new filled word form (that is the template document), the ClickUp AI extract the email field to custom field "email", and extract the address field to custom field "Address", etc.
I came up with this possibility while testing your feature of telling ClickUp AI (Custom Field) what specific information I want to extract from the task description for my AI custom field, which by the way, is INCREDIBLE! CONGRATULATIONS!
This would be a game changing :)

Julien da Costa you can't quite do that with AI CFs just yet, but you can do it with Agents (to automate) and/or Brain (to do it manually).
Agents and Brain will be able to access task attachments (if in a supported format), extract the info you need, and then popular (some types of) custom fields (e.g. people custom fields aren't supported).
Pretty sure Caroline Ginty is looking at supporting this with AI CFs too!

Alex Omeyer (ClickUp), I agree with your point. However, Agents still require significant testing to function reliably, and currently, they aren't very consistent when it comes to populating specific custom fields that need to be filled out accurately. Implementing this feature would make adoption and implementation much easier. Additionally, having the ability to quickly regenerate outputs if the initial response is unsatisfactory would be very helpful.

Stephen John T. Carlos: understood, thanks for clarifying Stephen!

Alex Omeyer (ClickUp)I was experiencing issues early on with having it prompt for custom fields etc. I wish in the Agents instructions we could prompt for fields? Is there any consideration for that and also for things like PDF's? To look for certain data that would be able to be matched to custom fields etc?
Thank you again
Caroline Ginty
Yes, confirmed that we plan to support this with AI Custom Fields as well!

Caroline Ginty thanks so much for confirming!

Vincent DAmico: We also shipped some improvements to CF retrieval for Agents and Brain.
Are you still having issues with this? Please feel free to report and we'll jump on them right away cc Ken Claassen

Alex Omeyer (ClickUp) Ken Claassen Need to be able to @mention specific Custom Fields when creating an Agent, so data entry (and extraction) works consistently.
Agents rarely, if ever, populate Custom Fields for me, even when I use the EXACT name in the prompt. If we could @mention Custom Fields, that would hopefully help Agents to put data in to the correct fields.
Right now, it often just leaves a note saying "fill this in yourself", or similar.

Guy Mannerings: right, so like variables in automations — correct?

I completely agree with this. For ClickUp's document process automation, this feature would be transformational. Additionally, we presently use a number of workarounds to extract and interpret data from attachments and return it to ClickUp fields, including using Google Docs, Zapier, and other tools.
It would save a ton of time and minimize errors if ClickUp AI could map values from a typical Word or PDF template straight into custom fields. The AI Custom Field feature is already powerful, and this enhancement would take it to the next level.

It would be great for Custom AI fields to be able to read attachments uploaded in ClickUp. Currently we are doing multiple workarounds for a file in ClickUp to be read via external tools such as Zapier and Google Suite then write back to a long text field in ClickUp for the Custom AI text field to sort and extract data from a file.
This has multiple use cases for automating data extraction and analysis from files.
