Hi ClickUp Team,
I’d like to request a feature that I believe would save a lot of time for anyone working with nested subtasks. I’ve attached a screenshot for reference.
The scenario
I use two levels of nested subtasks, for example: Project XYZ → Campaign Setup → Campaign Code / Campaign Requirements. When a second-level subtask changes status, I’d like its parent and grandparent to update automatically. In the screenshot, Campaign Code is “Doing” and Campaign Requirements is “Done,” yet both Campaign Setup and Project XYZ still show “To Do” until I update them manually.
What I’ve tried
I tried building this with automations. The trigger for subtask status changes is available, but the action only lets me update the status of the subtask itself; there’s no option to target the parent or grandparent task. ClickUp Brain confirmed that cascading status updates up or down the hierarchy isn’t currently possible with automations, and suggested using an AI Agent instead.
Why this matters
While an AI Agent could handle it, this is a simple, rule-based behavior that shouldn’t require AI. Ideally, it would work natively, or at minimum through a standard automation action such as “Update parent task status” and “Update top-level task status.” Without it, users have to click through and update multiple statuses for every change, which adds up quickly across large projects.
The request
Native option to roll up subtask status changes to parent and grandparent tasks, or
A standard automation action to update parent and top-level task status when a subtask changes.
Thank you for considering this. I’d be happy to share more details or help test it in an upcoming release.
Best regards,
Hasan
