Yes, the whole point of a recurring task is that it recurs
from
a template. Requiring an automation for this use is pretty silly.

Also, here's a workaround:
With automations, you can apply a specific template whenever a new task is created (You can even set the "Created by" only to recurring).
I always make sure that in the recurring settings of the task, it creates a new task and doesn't copy any other fields at all (as the template will take care of that).
If you have several different templates that have to be applied to different recurring tasks, create a custom dropdown with one option for each recurring task.
Now in the automation, add "If custom field (dropdown) = Dropdown of recurring task.
(see screenshot).
This way, it only applies the template to new tasks when the dropdown is equal to whatever you set it for the recurring task.
Hope this helps for now

Hi there, really hoping we can implement "Apply a template" in recurring tasks. I have been trying to create a recurring task + automation to make this work and it's not working. What I'm looking for is:
- Create a regular (Mon - Thu) recurring tasks that includes a Task Template where users will fill out details in the template. Hit complete.
- A new recurring task with the template (without the filled out details from the user from the previous day) to be created again for the next day.
I have attempted to use automation to do this and it's not working. I've tried:
- Apply a template
- Create a new task with template
Thanks.

Is there any update on this? Recurring tasks are not as useful as they coul could be..

Hey all, I'd like to re-open this idea in a different manner. Or please direct me to another suggestion if it fits better.
On the recurring task settings, there should be an option to 're-apply the task template' on reoccurrence (AKA apply a fresh template when a new task is created). When a new task is created, the template for that is pulled from the 'Template Center' - pulling in any new updates you've made to the template - description, action items, etc.
In the screenshot, I put the setting on top because selecting it should logically cancel out the below settings. Except for comments/activity, that'd be cool to keep if possible, but understandably challenging.
Adding this feature would solve ClickUp's long-standing headache of SOP and Process templating and management across the board.
An alternative solution via automations would be a similar setting in the 'Apply a task template' action to reapply the existing/previous template.

Thanks Zach, I've tried to explain it
better here

Thanks for the video Louis!
Here's a possible solution you and others voting here could try en lieu of the recurring settings having templates:
Let me know if that helps!

Zach - ClickUp: with this however, the issue is that the template for the recurring task would be applied to the entire list, and not just that specific task that should actually recur..

Is this what you're looking for Louis?
