Allow parent task to be completed automatically upon completion of all subtasks

Will Pace
I would like for the status of parent tasks to be automatically closed upon completion of all subtasks.

Hi everyone - I'm marking this request as complete as it's possible to set this up in one or more locations using Automations. Thanks!

The base automation works with parent tasks and one-level subtasks, but not nested subtasks. It would seem reasonable to apply to any level of subtask, automatically updating the parent-level. We have clients using tasks at the second and third level for action items that would benefit from this.

It would also be nice if an option to this feature was to automatically have a parent task's status be updated with the lowest status of its child tasks.
Premise:
Say your workflow has 9 statuses
Scenario
You have a parent task with 4 child tasks. (like a story with 4 working sub-tasks)
If...
Child Task 1 is status 8
Child Task 2 is status 4
Child Task 3 is status 9
Child Task 4 is status 7
Then...
Parent Task would be set to status 4 automatically and follow the lowest status ticket across the workflow.
This strategy would eliminate the chance of anyone misinterpreting the lowest point of progress for the story, as a whole in this scenario, while also ensuring that it is obvious that the story, as a whole, IS making progress across the workflow.

Hi caroline - but it will take automations usage isnt?
Caroline Ginty
dolev hayut: Yes, that's right with how this works today. Definitely something we can explore to better productize this outside of Automations though!

I agree with this being optional only. There are times when you want to add more subtasks and don't want the parent task to be automatically completed.

Jenny Brown: I've got this setup that it only happens if the parent task has a specific tag on it. So I can enable it on a per task base.

We’ve been able to achieve this with automations

TaeLynn Johnson: us too

This would overcome our primary challenge using subtasks.

As long as this was optional, I agree. In some cases, you might want a second thought before concluding your sub task list was comprehensive enough to represent the whole of the task.

As mentioned, it would be ideal to turn this on or off by space, but overall, a natural process for many to close the parent automatically. +1

If this were to be a new feature, it would be great if it was a setting that could be turned on and off as in our spaces, this wouldn’t work. Our tasks move along a chain of status’ and it’s only the subtasks that are marked as either complete or incomplete. While the main (parent) task will display as a status based on where it is along that chain, that may be pending, available, sold or withdrawn.
