Custom Relationships by task type
Jenni Skarsten
Custom relationships are currently directly related from one location to another. Now that you can create custom fields by task type, it would be great if you could create custom relationships by task type as well.
Use case: We use task types to help define our hierarchy of work, from strategic objectives, key results, and programs to the individual tasks that need to be completed to execute on delivering those. Each of those require different status schemas so they can live as subtasks.
With this feature we'd be able to:
- Link project task types to program task types
- Link bugs to their related user stories
- Link test cases to user stories
The intent would be that this custom relationship would be workspace wide for any task that uses the task type.

Relationship/Task field - Related to task type

Related to the list is a very good feature, but it could be connected only on a level of specific list and not globally or in a folder, which limits its usage. I suppose there is a good technical reason for that; it's a reason why I suggest the third option: make the relationship relatable to the task type. For example, tell that the relation must be just with a task type "Milestone" (or Contact, Idea, whatever...). For me, it would be a huge improvement, because searching for milestones in the structure or all tasks by their names is very ineffective.

Custom field of type "Tasks": Restrict by Task Type

As a user, I'd like to be able to add a custom field of type "task" that allows linking only to tasks of a specific type (e.g., "client account," "version/release"), so that I can restrict the field to only those task types.
Currently, there is only a "task from list" filter, which doesn't even work at the workspace level.

Historically List CustomField Relationship List to List
New Task Type Custom Fields did not get relationships, but they are screaming out and actually better suited for CustomField Relationships mapping Task of specific Task Type to a Task of another Task Type.
Ideally this would support options such as 1:1, 1:many and 1:many(unique constraint) to expand use cases.

Having exact same problem. We had a List of type of task as that historically was only way to manage Task Types with Custom Fields. We are now migrating to (or want to) migrate to a Task Type, but with the Tasks that now relate we won't be able to have that filtered to the List. What we need is the ability to filter the available tasks by Task Type. This should be a very quick enhancement as only needs another filter option on the List lookup to limit returned Tasks.
As an interim workaround I am testing....
- making my old List private so it is just a Sys Admin holder List.
- Automation that on "Task type changes" to TASK TYPE then "Add to List" TASK TYPE LIST
Cons - there is a "Add to List" action, but no "Remove from List" action, so if Task Type is altered from TASK TYPE we have an incorrect Task living in the TASK TYPE LIST that needs manual cleanup.
