This really should have been inherently how it works..

I'd like to add a perspective on the root cause of this long-standing limitation.
The core issue, in my view, is that ClickUp has never defined the Parent Task as a semantically distinct object. Today, a Parent Task is treated exactly like any other task — it has its own status, its own custom field values, its own progress bar — rather than acting as a dedicated aggregation container that automatically rolls up data from its children (status, progress, custom fields, time entries).
This architectural ambiguity is what generates all the inconsistencies this thread has been discussing since 2020.
That said, I understand this is not a universally desired behavior. Some teams may intentionally want Parent Tasks to remain independent from their subtasks — and that's a perfectly valid use case.
My proposal: introduce a workspace-level (or Space-level) setting that allows teams to choose between two modes:
• Standard mode – Parent Task behaves as it does today, fully independent from its children.
• Aggregator mode – Parent Task acts purely as a rollup container: its status, progress, and custom fields are automatically derived from the underlying subtasks, with no standalone operational value of its own.
This would address the needs of teams with mature project management practices — where a Parent Task is expected to reflect the real consolidated state of its children — without disrupting workflows that rely on the current behavior.
For organizations using ClickUp for structured PM (OKRs, multi-level WBS, program-level tracking), the absence of Aggregator mode is a genuine blocker, not just a missing convenience feature.

Hello ClickUp Team,
We use ClickUp to organize our tasks and measure progress, but we have a problem with the automatic progress bar: when we complete sub-subtasks, the progress bar for the subtasks and tasks does not update automatically. For our purposes, it is very important to be able to track the progress.
Thank you!

Hello Team ClickUp,
Any update on this item?
this is a very useful and critical feature, and I am not sure why it has not been implemented since 2020.

Merged in a post:
Percentage completion inclusive of nested tasks and tasks that may live in more than 1 list (e.g., Product Management and Sprint)
Steven Kearney
This is another critical item. I need to see how the tasks under stories roll up to percentage completion of the parent work item. This informs discussions and escalations if we are off track from plan.

It's a bug fix, not a feature request.

Glad to see I'm not the only one looking for this. Crazy that it doesn't currently exist

I just don’t understand why it is not the way Clickup handle this from scratch.
I spent 1 hours with this, because I was sure I did something wrong. But no, it is just a stupid implementation.
Ok…

Would really, really like to see this implemented.
