Bulk Upload to Update Existing Tasks via Excel
future
Janette Rosales
Description:
Add the ability to bulk upload an Excel spreadsheet to update existing tasks with additional information (e.g., email addresses, phone numbers, status notes) without creating duplicate tasks.
Key Requirements:
Match existing tasks by unique ID or title.
Update only the specified fields from the spreadsheet.
Prevent creation of new tasks unless explicitly intended.
Allow updates to multiple fields and custom fields at once.
Maintain full change history for audit tracking.
Value & Impact:
This feature would greatly improve efficiency by enabling quick updates to many tasks simultaneously. It would save time, reduce manual data entry, and help maintain accuracy in contact information, status updates, and other critical task details.
Example Use Case:
When multiple tasks require adding a missing email address or phone number, users can prepare a single Excel file with the updates and bulk apply them in one step, avoiding the need to open and edit each task individually.

Lily Chan Thanks for merging this. I know this has been one of the biggest needs of the platform. I work with other companies that use Clickup and dont use Clickup Ticketing systems etc.
They give us weekly & monthly reports of updated statuses / etc. So far I've been unable to use Clickup for these workflows because of not having this capability to update existing tasks.
Not everyone in the world uses clickup and the reality is we have to be able to update existing databases to keep it worthwhile.
This enhancement would help solve getting more adoption with Clickup. It would help us visualize things which are out of our control to be able to update these separate workflows that we are needing to update. While CSV imports have improved this has held us back from not being able to adopt any workflow with CSV's.
Hoping the team is able to consider this. John Sanchez

Vincent D'Amico: Thank you for sharing your specific use case. In your specific workflow, does that weekly/monthly report that you get with updated statuses include a ClickUp task id, or would you have a need to be able to select a different field to be able to match tasks from the csv to the existing task in ClickUp?

Lily Chan It would be ideal to set a custom field as the task ID or use a ClickUp task ID. In my case, which likely resonates with thousands of ClickUp users, there are other ticketing platforms used by third parties that require monitoring.
The ability to create a new task or append to an existing one would be incredibly useful. It would improve visibility and provide full context when working with organizations, which is something we all do.
Fortunately, we have a product manager or relationship manager sharing bulk tickets related to our organization. This could give me an advantage when analyzing open and closed tickets. While they email us bulk updates weekly, it's so easy to lose track of tasks / tickets if they're not in ClickUp which is what i want to do with this data.
I held back from utilizing clickup as my solution for this because I would need to create a new list every time or manually go one by one. to keep track of updates on an existing case that needs to be listed as an update or status changed.

Import to update existing tasks

A basic funtion of a database is the ability to update the data on mass via an import. It's shocking that clickup has yet to add this. All the fields need are there except the option to select the task id.
